We are proud to present the first World Music Workshop this Spring with Cheick Cissokho, organised by the International School of Music Finland in cooperation with the Global Music Centre.
The kora is a beautiful, old 22-stringed harp instrument played by the West-African musician families. Nowadays it can be more and more often heard in world music around the globe, adapted to different musical styles, but in this workshop, we will start from the very beginning. We will learn the basic playing techniques, melodic and rhythm patterns as well as songs. Also, the participants will learn about the history of kora, and how it was and still is traditionally used in the coastal West-Africa.
Our teacher Cheick Cissokho is a member of one of the oldest and most respected “jali” musician families, known and appreciated as the preservers as well as active developers of this impressive musical tradition. He was taught the secrets of kora the traditional way, first how to build one from scratch, and then learning the traditional songs and musical patterns all kora jalis should know.
A limited number of koras will be provided. Everyone who has a kora, can and should bring it along. This workshop is aimed to everyone interested in playing stringed instruments; To friends of world music; To friends of African arts. Welcome!
