WORLD MUSIC WORKSHOP SERIES: BULGARIAN SINGING WORKSHOP

We are proud to present the last World Music Workshop this autumn with Anna Dantchev, organised by the International School of Music Finland in cooperation with the Global Music Centre and Etnosoi! Festival. 

Description:

The Bulgarian singing tradition is rich. The strong characters of Bulgarian voice have inspired musicians for many decades around the world. Musical elements in Bulgarian singing tradition i.e. constant drone, sharp dissonance, overtones, and mellow melodies with decorative ornaments will create a mysterious sound together. Bulgarian singing tradition has both solo and group songs.

In this workshop, you will get to learn about basic characters of Bulgarian singing tradition. We will sing both solo and harmonised (1-3 voices) songs from different ethnographical areas from Bulgarian.

You don’t need to have any previous knowledge about Bulgarian singing. The songs will be taught both by ears and with sheet music.

Contents:

  • Overview on Bulgarian singing tradition and ethnographical areas
  • Basic ornamentation from different ethnographical areas
  • Learning songs by ear (with handouts)
  • Choir singing
