Originally from Paris, Laura Martin completed her Bachelor’s studies in Belgium at the Brussels Royal Conservatory, in the class of Marie Hallynck, and then graduated with her Master’s Degree at the Sibelius Academy in 2018 where she studied with Martti Rousi. Afterwards, she served as Cello Assistant in the class of Martti Rousi.
Laura Martin is a very versatile musician. In addition to her passion for classical music repertoire, she has always had a strong interest in art in general and likes to experiment and see how different art forms can interact and enrich each other to deliver a specific message. She likes to think herself as a multi-faceted artist: a cellist on one side and an artist working with different art forms and reflecting on society on the other. From concert exhibitions to improvised performances with dancers, Laura’s latest performance was a Butoh dance and cello performance called “Concordia,” which took place at the EMMA-Espoo Museum of Modern Art in May 2022.
Laura is a rare musician who has made her own instrument. At the young age of 17, she crafted a cello that became her musical partner for several years. This unforgettable process opened to her the universe of sound-making from its deepest origin.
Now based in Helsinki, Laura is the cellist of the Trio du Jardin Féérique which develops projects in France and Finland, as well as the principal cellist and one of the founding members of the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra. As a freelancer, she regularly works with various orchestras such as the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Orchestra, the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, in addition to her activity as a chamber musician.
Laura Martin is also the associate director of Cellofest.fi, created together with Martti Rousi in February 2019, the first-ever International Cello Festival in Finland, which takes place every second year.
Laura teaches cello at ISM Finland in English and French. To purchase a trial lesson with Laura, please contact us.
